The bike & ski tour leads from Domodossolas railway station to the nearest high mountain range, Cistella/Diei group. The tour is especially beautiful as a spring ski tour.
From Domodossola's railway station we start by bike in the direction of Simplon Pass (SS33) and follow it to the centre of the villiage Varzo. There we continue for 3 km on the road to San Domenico until we reach the small village Maulone. A small narrow and steep road leads us to the Alpe Solcio hut. The hut is also a good place to spend the night if you want to divide the tour into 2 days or explore the mountain range on ohter days. After changing from bike to ski, we ascent along the Solcio Couloir up to the ridge and walk the last vertical meters to the summit.

Author’s recommendation

Cima di Valle is the closest peak of the group but the other peaks are also worth to climb. The main peak of the group, Monte Cistella, can be reached in an additional hour, Pizzo Diei in 1.5 hours.

Safety information

Be sure to check the avalanche report before starting the tour! The tour is only recommended in very safe conditions.

Equipment

Crampons can be useful for the ski tour to Cime di Valle. For the tour extension to the peaks of Monte Cistella and Pizzo Diei I recommend crampons and ice axes.
