Strenuous and partly demanding climb up to a wonderfol lookout above Zion National Park

"Angels Landing" is the name of a scenic lookout platform in the middle of Zion Canyon. The peak measures 1765 m and is surrounded by the Big Bend of the Virgin River. Due to this exposed position, you have a wonderful view into different parts of the canyon.

The tour is only 7 km long, nevertheless it is only suitable for experienced hikers. Especially the last metres up to the top require mountain experience, safe walking in difficult terrain and absence of vertigo. You will be climbing up the rough mountain side and an exposed ridge without steps or handrails. There is just a steel chain to hold on.

Author’s recommendation

Anyone who doesn't want to climb the last part up to the peak, can enjoy the wonderful views from the level plateau beneath.

Turn-by-turn directions

Our tour starts at the bus stop "The Grotto". At first, we cross the Virgin River on a narrow bridge, then we walk the first kilometres on a concrete path. Then, the terrain rises and our path clims in a series of hairpin bends. After passing by a huge rock, we turn left and enter the so-called "Refrigerator Canyon". Due to the steep walls on either side, the canyon lies in the shade most of the day and offers therefore a cool climate.

We have to climb more hairpin bends, until we reach the plateau "Scout's Lookout". Everyone, who doesn't want to climb up to the top, has reached the destination of the tour. The big rocks invite you to take a break and enjoy the marvellous view down into the valley.

To reach the top of Angel's Landing, we have to master the ascent across an exposed ridge. The mere distance only measures about 800 m, nevertheless you have to consider, that the terrain is extremely difficult to walk on. Up on the Angels Landing, we can enjoy the view to both sides of the Zion Canyon and the Virgin River running through it. We descend then on the same path, until we reach the bus stop.
