A promising and low-traffic hike around the Rostock city harbor - always by the water and the silhouette of the Hanseatic city from different angles.
This city walk shows the Hanseatic and university city from its maritime side and with the flair of a city built close to the water. You circle the Unterwarnow on low-traffic pedestrian and bicycle paths, let the wind blow your nose, watch boats, relax in the green, stroll along the quay, stop by with a view of the water and enjoy beautiful sunsets. The tour around the city harbor is an absolute classic among locals and those looking for relaxation. City of Rostock? You won't feel much of the city feeling on this tour. Enjoy the round - there is hardly a better view of the skyline of the Hanseatic city than from the Gehlsdorfer Ufer.

In winter only limited or no ferry traffic on weekends!

Here you will find current information and the timetable for the departure times of the Gehlsdorfer ferry.

Rostock city harbor / icebreaker Stephan Jantzen

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour described here around the Rostock city harbor is a round tour and start / finish possible at any time. Due to the good possibilities for parking the car or connection to public transport, we recommend starting at the icebreaker Stehan Jantzen, which is located in the city harbor and in the large car park. From here you can go the tour either clockwise or counterclockwise; In the following we describe tour counter clockwise.

So you go east and follow the Kempowski embankment along the quay edge. The promenade is an extremely popular promenade and benches, bars (depending on the season with outdoor dining) and former fishing boats, in which fresh fish is prepared today, invite you to linger. After about 800 meters you will reach the "Am Strande" warehouse and you will keep walking along the water. You pass the main administration building of the cruise line AIDA and come to a pedestrian bridge over a small harbor basin with wooden steps, where young and old often meet. Use this to get to the wooden peninsula. On the former port and trading center, where a residential area has developed in recent years, people now live and live in an urban, idyllic and close proximity to the water. You will remain in the immediate vicinity of the water and can once again see the contrasting silhouette of the old warehouses and the new AIDA complex before walking up the stairs and through the residential area. A small foot and bike path leads through a green area and around the new buildings to Petridamm. Here you cross the Warnow for the first time over the bridge. Keep left and turn left again as soon as possible (either directly after the bridge or approx. 200 m further via Altkarlshof) to get back to the banks of the Warnow. Now follow the wide footpath along the banks of the Warnow. The silhouette of the Hanseatic city is changing and soon you will have a wonderful view of the skyline. Watch the water sports enthusiasts, sunbathe on one of the numerous seating areas in the green and treat yourself to a break. A break on the Warnow-Steg, which is about a 20-minute walk from the Petridamm, is particularly recommended. After a further 15 minutes, the Gehlsdorf waterfront begins at the Rostock Ruder Club. Continue to follow the quayside to the yacht club and sailing club and stroll through the Eldorado of water sports enthusiasts. Depending on what time of year you are traveling, there is always a lot to observe here: boats are stored in the winter quarters or prepared for the coming season, sailing boats berth on the jetties from time to time. After you have passed the last jetty, it is still about 750 meters to the ferry pier. The promenade leads through the green and you can still fully enjoy the view of the old town of Rostock and the city harbor. From the ferry pier, take one of the ferries across the Warnow - depending on the day of the week and season, either to the Kabutzenhof ferry pier or to the Schnickmannstrasse ferry pier (located at the starting point of the tour). If you translate to the Kabutzenhof, you still have about a kilometer of walking distance from there to the starting point. We recommend a detour from the Kabutzenhof to the sailor's monument and towards the former site of the Neptune shipyard, which is now a modern office and residential building. The restored crane on Hellingstrasse is reminiscent of the former use of the so-called shipyard triangle.

Back at the Kabutzenhof, follow the Warnow shoreline again, past the old docks, which are now used as cultural sites such as the MAU Club and the Compagnie de Comedie and restaurants. You pass a small marina and later the small museum harbor on the Haedgehalbinsel. You can already see Stephan Jantzen from the brewing house Alter Fritz and the starting point is reached. Let the tour end with a brewing specialty!
