The excursion that leads to the UNESCO Geographical Center of the Dolomites crosses the Ombretta Valley under the imposing south face of the Marmolada in a path suitable for everyone.

It is a very suggestive valley, full of grazing cows and nice marmots. Along the way you can meet two mountain farm and after the totem with GPS coordinates you can meet the Onorio Falier hut.

One of the most delightful hikes the area offers is the charming itinerary crosses the Val Ombretta, taking in the Malga Ombretta mountain pasture and the Falier Refuge. A suggestive and simple itinerary, suitable for the whole family, in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Marmolada, with a wonderful views on to the Southwest wall of the Queen of the Dolomites. The starting point to reach  Rifugio Falier (2080 m.) is from Malga Ciapela, where you can leave your car and set out for the magnificent Valle Ombretta. Alternatively, the car can also be parked near the campsite. Initially the Italian Alpine Club path no. 610, extended during the First World War by Italian military, starts out quite steep but  becomes more even and regular. You come to a crossroads where to the left you go to the Val di Franzedaz, and to the right you proceed for a brief hike to the mouth of the Valle Ombretta. Here the mule trail ends and you continue along a visible path  that passes through the old dairy barns of  Malga  Ombretta (1904 m).

Here turn left as the signboard tells and you'll reach the Centre of the Dolomites, where a totem with a stone heart'll prove you that you're in the geographical centre of the Dolomites Unesco. A walk along a green flat pasture with a slight climb will get you to the Rifugio Falier ( ca 40 minutes from Malga Ombretta ), built in 1911 and one of the first mountain refuges. This is one of the best valley to watch and listen to the groudhogs in their natural habitat;  from the spring thaw to the late autumn, this valley resounds with the whistles of this cute animals.
