On the trail of the dukes
Past government palaces, summer residences, pleasure and hunting lodges - cyclists can follow the traces of the dukes to their former residences for more than 280 kilometres. The country was divided many times by disputes over the regency. The Dukes of Mecklenburg left behind a veritable flood of castles.
Enjoy the view of the magnificent Schwerin castle in the castle park.
The golden roofs and graceful towers of Schwerin Castle shimmer like fairy tales in the sun. Here, in the royal seat of Schwerin, the cycle tour begins. Wiligrad Castle, the youngest castle of the ducal family, is dreamily located between woods on the western shore of Lake Schweriner See. The roots of the country are anchored in the nearby village of Mecklenburg, whose name derives from the former Michelenburg. Duke Johann Albrecht had a princely seat built in the Italian Renaissance style in the Hanseatic and World Heritage city of Wismar.
Back inland, the path winds its way on the second stage past the clear lake Neukloster See. The tour leads over ever steeper hills, which reward you with magnificent views, through the typical Mecklenburg landscape to the town Bützow. Bützow was already a bishop's seat in the 13th century. In the Barlach-town of Güstrow, the Renaissance castle, to which the Bützow-Güstrow canal leads, is enchanting. To the monastery Dobbertin at the lake of the same name the cyclists cycle through the heath Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide with its countless lakes.
At the end of the forest behind the city Goldberg, there is a fantastic view of the picturesque landscape. In the distance, you can see the castle of the pretty town of Neustadt-Glewe and in the middle the blue avenue, the Müritz-Elde waterway. The Baroque palace in the town Ludwigslust is reminiscent of the French Versailles with its enchanting park with fountains, avenues and statues. The ducal hunting lodge Friedrichsmoor impresses cyclists in the Lewitz Nature Reserve. Along the Störkanal (sturgeon channel), we head towards Schwerin again.
