An easy going, and mostly flat, ride leaving the city of Copenhagen to follow good cycle paths along the coast, heading north to the bustling town of Helsingør.

Begin in the Nyhavn area of Copenhagen, cycle north out of the city passing the Royal Palace of Amalienborg and pedal (or push your bike) through the millitary barracks of Kastellet. The famous Little Mermaid statue is just a couple of minutes ride off the route at the harbour if you missed seeing it on the loop tour of the city. Join a segregated cycle path through the busy port area of Copenhagen and pass some incredible modern Danish architecture in the weathly Østerbro district. Continue north along the coast on cycle paths to reach the yacht haven at Rungsted - a great spot to stop for some lunch with plenty of cafes and restaurants looking out across the marina.

Humlebaek haven a few Kilometres south of Helsingor is a particular highlight! You'll pass it's traditional painted Danish cottages with thatched roofs interspersed with some very modern danish architure. Arrive in Helsingør after passing the busy port (from where it's a short trip on a ferry across to Sweden) before finishing at the train station and ferry terminal on the waterfront a couple of minutes walk from the old town with it's many cafes, bakeries and delicatessens.

Author’s recommendation

The yacht haven as you enter Rungsted is the perfect place to stop and take in the best of the Danish coast today with numerous cafes, bars and restaurants with something to suit all tastes.

Always wear a helmet when cycling and if you have any concerns over the condition of your rental bike please call the bike hire shop or our Macs office using the the number provided in your information pack.

Please beware of traffic wile out on your bike particularly when entering and leaving towns where traffic flow tends to be the highest. Remember to stay on the right-hand side and use cycle lanes where available. Be mindful of other road users, particularly cyclists on the busy cycle lanes in Copenhagen staying on the right-hand side to allow faster cyclists to pass.

Always be prepared to cycle through a change of weather conditions and check the local weather forecast before cycling. Remember to bring a waterproof jacket and a warm layer particularly as the wind around coastal Denmark can significantly effect the temperature. Gloves (fingerless mitts in summer) are popular to provide some extra warmth and handlebar padding when riding and don't forget a battery pack to provide an emergency charge to any navigation equipment you may be using.
