Vršič, 1611 m, is the most beautiful road pass in Julian Alps. Biking over it is one of the most prestigeous tours in the area. This tour proposes to ride from Jesenice to Most na Soši, from where you can return by train.
One of the most beautiful biking tours in Slovenian mountains. The scenery over Vršič pass is wonderful. From Kranjska Gora to the pass the ascent is steep and difficult, then it goes mostly down. In the valley of Trenta/Soča there are many wonderful places to visit. So, consider spending for this tour two days, even if you would be able to do it in one day!

Author’s recommendation

Here is the list of top sights and places worth of visiting. You may not be able to visit them all, so consider returning! And, as said, consider sleeping in the upper valley of Soča, so, spending for the tour 2 days.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Jesenice train station you can go on the biking track, but as it goes quite up and down, you can perhaps better take the main road and go on the bike track on the bridge before Mojstrana. Then you follow it (as on the map) till Kranjska gora, where you turn left.

The ascent on Vršič pass goes all the time by the main road. Depending on time of the day and season, it may be quite busy.

From Vršič pass you descend by the main road to Trenta. Just before the village Na Logu, there's another small, quite gentle ascent, then it goes down again. You pass the village of Soča, then just before Bovec you need to descend to Koritnica river and after crossing it, you have to climb up in Bovec town again.

From Bovec it goes along Soča by the main road gently down. You pass Žaga, Srpenica, Trnovo and with a few smaller ups and downs get into Kobarid town. You can explore it, but otherwise it's recommended that just before the town you turn sharp left, cross the Soča river, and continue riding by its left bank. That local road is much less busy and the landscape is nicer.

After passing several villages, you reach the Tolmin town. You cross it in the same direction (SE), following the Soča river, and then ride along the nice, emerald blue artificial lake till Most na Soči. There you turn left, into the side valley, because the train station is there, on the southern bank of Idrijca river.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike

Any quality bike to overcome big distance and ascend the steep road pass is suitable. A good mountain bike (with good gears) can do it as well.
