On the tracks of history
Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town and the first Roman capital in Britain. However, it did not remain for too long – 17 years later it was demolished by Boudica. Later, when the Normans invaded Britain, the mighty castle was built and is now surrounded by an artists’ quarter. On a stroll through the narrow streets, you will stumble across signs of the eventful past of Colchester.
Between 1069 and 1076, William the Conqueror ordered to build what is now the UK’s biggest keep. It is even bigger than the White Tower at the Tower of London. Nowadays it’s a museum with a great collection of remains of its history. With lots of enthusiasm, the museum's team brings history back to live an helps you and your family and friends to make some unforgettable memories while learning exciting facts of Essex’s past.
