On the tracks of history

Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town and the first Roman capital in Britain. However, it did not remain for too long – 17 years later it was demolished by Boudica. Later, when the Normans invaded Britain, the mighty castle was built and is now surrounded by an artists’ quarter. On a stroll through the narrow streets, you will stumble across signs of the eventful past of Colchester.

Between 1069 and 1076, William the Conqueror ordered to build what is now the UK’s biggest keep. It is even bigger than the White Tower at the Tower of London. Nowadays it’s a museum with a great collection of remains of its history. With lots of enthusiasm, the museum's team brings history back to live an helps you and your family and friends to make some unforgettable memories while learning exciting facts of Essex’s past.

Not far from London, Essex is the ideal destination to get away from the city to calm down and escape the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. Finding a calm spot isn’t difficult at all because over 70% of Essex is rural.

If you're loving the beach, Essex’s 560-km (350-mi) long coast is the one for you because it is the second-longest coastline of the UK. Also, there are 35 islands – more than in any other English county - some of which are truly lost places waiting to be discovered by you.

Rural Essex has plenty of advantages to make your active break a special one, the climate, for example, is very dry. So, compared to the other counties, it’s likeable that it won’t rain in Essex as much as anywhere else in the country. Ideal for spending time in the outdoors. The Dedham Vale even provides you with the loveliest scenery for your walking and cycling adventures. It is also known as the Constable County because famous British painter, John Constable, created some of his best romantic landscape paintings here.

If you're starting your journey from London and you enjoy walking, why not travel on foot to Essex. The long-distance path, The Essex Way, starts from the London Underground Central Line at Epping and guides you to the port of Harwich.
