Finland and water – those two simply belong together. There is a good reason why Suomi is also called the land of a thousand lakes. In Uusimaa, the southern region around Helsinki, there are lakes, rivers and of course the long coastline of the Gulf of Finland with its archipelagos. In fact, you must always expect one thing in Uusimaa: you might get wet!
If you visit Uusimaa, you must visit some of the islands. There you can find the popular sea fortress Suomenlinna and its sister fortress Svartholma. They both are really impressive and lead visitors into the past. Iso Vasikkasaari however ist an outdoor recreation area.
A very special experience is a visit to the Bengtskär lighthouse. The highest lighthouse in the Nordic countries is located on a small island 25 km southwest of Hanko. From up here, you have a spectacular view over the ocean.
With the island hopping ticket, you get the chance to visit several islands in a day. Vallisaari Island, one of the region’s most popular destinations, and the Suomenlinna Fortress are a must-see attraction. Moreover, you can visit the small island of Lonna where there is a cozy public sauna.
Kayaking and Canoeing
Uusimaa, like almost the whole country, is ideal for adventurous kayaking or canoeing tours. With experienced guides at your side, you get to visit the most beautiful remote islands. Often the offers combine kayaking and canoeing with a short hike in the pristine nature of the archipelago or even an overnight stay on one of the islands. If you do not have too much time or simply want to learn how to paddle, there are shorter evening tours.
Boat tours and Ferries
Whoever wants to see much more of the beautiful Archipelago, should join a boat tour or use one of the ferries. With stops along the way in cosy cafés or to discover the beautiful nature from island to island. A boat tour around Helsinki is the perfect possibility to experience the city from another perpective. You can listen to a commentary while watching all the attractions.
