The 11 km (6.8 miles) long city tour takes you to the most famous works of the artist Antoni Gaudí, who shaped the cityscape like no other.

Barcelona wouldn’t be the same without the famous buildings of the architect Antoni Gaudí. Secular buildings like Casa Battló, Casa Milà, Park Güell or Catherdral Sagrada Família identify the city.

Firstly Antoni Gaudí’s style was misunderstood. When the artist completed his studies in 1878 at the architecture school in Barcelona a professor once considered: “I’m not sure, whether we gave the title a lunatic or a genius.”  Today there’s no doubt anymore: a lot of Gaudí’s works meanwhile belong to the UNESCO world heritage.

Gaudí’s works are characterized by a really unique style: The “modernisme” is the Catalonian answer to the European “art nouveau” and it combines organic shapes with floral elements. Right angles and clear structures cannot be found.

The city walk starts at the Metro-Station Urquinona in the center of Barcelona. We pass Casa Calvet and the Catherdral Sagrada Família, which is probably the most famous building of the architect and incomplete to this day. We walk uphill to the Park Güell, a vast garden which Gaudí constructed for his mentor Eusebi Güell. We follow the track to Casa Vicens, Casa Milá and Casa Battló until we return to the starting point.

Author's recommendation

The famous crypt of the chapel Colonia Güell is not visited on this city tour, as it is located too far away from city center. But it’s definitely worth visiting. You can reach the Colonia Güell by tram departing from Plaza España.

Turn-by-turn directions

Departing at the Metro-Station Urquinaona we head north following Carrer de Pau Claris. After 300 m we turn right into Carrer de Casp. On the right-hand side we soon recognize Casa Calvet. We continue on this street until it crosses Carrer de la Marina. We turn left and pass the bullfight arena „La Monumental“ heading straight towards Catedral Sagrada Família. We surround the Cathedral and follow Avenida de Gaudí to the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. We turn left into Carrer de Cartagena, after 600 m turn left once again, cross the small park and follow various small streets uphill towards Park Güell. After an extensive walk through Park Güell and having enjoyed the great view over Barcelona, we continue downhill. We cross the district “La Salut”, a big road and continue right at the second opportunity. We follow Carrer de Sant Salvador to the intersection with Carrer Gran de Garcia, where we turn left. After having crossed another big road we recognize Casa Milà on the left-hand side and 500 m further on the right-hand side Casa Battló. The track takes us straight forward passing four blocks until we turn left into Carrer de Casp where we return after a right turn to our starting point the Metro-Station Urquinaona.
