In the heart of central Italy, Umbria is situated on the central Apennine ridge. Completely in the Italian hinterland, the region is surrounded by Lazio, Marche and Tuscany. Despite its position close to the Apennines, the territory has, in addition to mountainous areas, also large flat and hilly areas, especially in the central part of the region. Umbria is home to the magnificent Marmore waterfalls, among the most beautiful in Europe, and also the largest lake in central Italy, the Trasimeno, surrounded by myths and legends that date back to the ancient Etruscans. Along cultural and pilgrimage routes such as La Via di San Francesco, it is possible to reach important destinations of historical, cultural and religious importance such as Assisi, Norcia and Gubbio. Among other destinations, are famous the unique medieval centers of Perugia, Citta` di Castello, Bevagna, Spello and the perched citadel of Orvieto.
