There are a number of different starting points for the Garth Mountain Walk but we choose to start from the Taffs Well Inn, Taffs Well (Post Code: CF15 7PU).
Take the path to the right of the pub, then the right-hand fork and follow the path across the River Taff and up the other side until you reach the road. This is called Main Road.
Turn right and follow this road for approximately 200 metres until you reach the Gwaelod y Garth Inn. Turn left before the pub and follow the road up and around the left hairpin bend.
You will now continue along this pretty country road for about 1.3 miles. First, you will cross a cattle grid, then an old crumbling barn on the left, followed by a couple of pink cottages on the right. Approximately 300 metres past the pink cottages, you will take a sharp right turn off the road.
Follow this track up the hill, over the common for the next 10-15 minutes, in a northeasterly direction, until you can see the trig point indicating the top of Garth Mountain.
Here you will be able to appreciate the fantastic 360 degree views on offer (subject to weather conditions).
Leave the trig point in an easterly direction along the mountain ridge until the path veers firstly to the south and then back to the west. This path leads gradually to the road that you approached on.
When you reach the road turn left and follow it back the way you came.
Make sure you drop into the lovely Gwaelod y Garth Inn on the way back for some well-earned refreshments!
The total distance of the Garth Mountain Walk is 4.41 miles.
