From the vast, flat prairies of Wyoming suddenly rises a round mountain with strange, deep grooves - Devils Tower. America's first national monument is an unusual natural landmark, a climber's paradise and a sacred site for Native Americans. Its name is misleading, however, because because legend has it that the mountain is not the home of the devil, but a refuge from a bear.

The Legends of the Native Americans

Over time, numerous indigenous tribes have lived in the immediate vicinity of Devils Tower and have created theories and stories about the origin of this strange natural monument. Whether among the Lakota, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Crow or Arapahoe - all the legends prominently feature a bear.

The stories differ in details, but the basic idea is that one or more indigenous people flee from a bear. They save themselves on a rock and beg the Great Spirit for help. The Great Spirit then causes the rock to grow taller. In its attempts to catch its prey, the bear leaves claw marks on the rock, but it does not reach the people.

The outcome of each story is very different: sometimes the girls stay on the mountain, sometimes they shine from then on as stars in the sky, sometimes the boys are brought down by an eagle, and sometimes there is no exact description of the rescue of the natives on the rock. However, the mountain usually ends up becoming the bear's home. Therefore, the natural monument has for centuries borne names such as "Bear's Tipi", "Bear's House", "Bear's Lodge" or "Home of Bears".

Why is the Bear Mountain called "Devils Tower"?

"Devils Tower", the misleading name for the towering mountain, comes from Colonel Irving Dodge, who explained it like this in 1876: On the old maps, the Native American name ”Mateo Tepee” (= Bear Lodge) is written. The common translation for this expression is ”bad god‘s tower”. From this, the more elegant “Devils Tower” was derived. Today the name is considered a mistranslation, but a name change is rather difficult.

Geologists have a different explanation for the mountain's formation: 50 million years ago, plate tectonic processes in western North America formed the Black Hills and also Devils Tower - molten rock was forced to the surface and upward, magma ate into the sedimentary rock, and as it cooled, it was eroded away, leaving the deep grooves in the rock.

A popular destination in the northeast of Wyoming

Today, the first national monument of the USA is a tourist attraction. The imposing rock jutting out of the surroundings offers, after all, an optimal photo motif and a few mysteries. In the visitor center you can learn a lot about the geology of the tower and the nature in the surrounding area. Also the culture of the indigenous prairie inhabitants is illuminated. A circular path of about two kilometers leads around the mountain, so you can admire it from all sides.
