The pope lives in Rome. He always lived there. That is where he belongs. Rome and the pope belong together like hiking and mountains or watching sports and drinking beer. Anyway, where else should he go? He even has his own little state (the Vatican) situated in the middle of the “eternal city”. It is thus very astonishing when you find yourself in front of an impressive papal palace during a visit to the beautiful provincial town of Avignon. Who in God’s name put it there? Why would a pope need a palace in the Provence?
