Skiing in Germany's low mountain ranges

Do you want to find an alternative to skiing in the Alps? Come and visit the ski resorts of Germany’s lower mountain ranges! The downhills are usually not as long and not very steep, but ideal for one-day-family-trips.

Among the most popular low mountain ranges are the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg as well the Bavarian Forest. Both regions offer multiple smaller ski resorts with easier slopes. But also advanced winter sport fans will find a few challenges here. Felsberg (1493) in the Black Forest and Großer Arber (1455 m) in the Bavarian Forest even have some FIS downhill courses (International Ski Federation).

The people of Central Germany prefer the ski resorts in Sauerland near Winterberg, Willingen, Oberwiesenthal.

Germany's biggest ski resorts

When you search for the biggest ski resorts, you will easily find yourself in the Alps. More specifically, the Bavarian Alps. Among the biggest and most popular are Garmisch-Partenkirchen with Zugspitze, Winklmoosalm-Steinplatte and Oberstdorf.

The ski resort Garmisch-Classic includes three mountains: Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze. Thus, a great range of slopes spread in a relatively small space surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape. The advanced downhill slopes are considered to be among the toughest downhills worldwide – such as the legendary Kandahar course.

The ski resort Winklmoosalm-Steinplatte near Reit im Winkl in the Chiemgauer Alps has one of Germany’s longest slopes: the “Seegatterl” leads on a 9 km long downhill course through the German-Austrian ski resort.

Moreover, Oberstdorf im Allgäu is one of Germany’s most popular winter sport regions with about 130 km of slopes. The border crossing ski organization “Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal” consists of five ski resorts with Nebelhorn, Fellhorn/Kanzelwand and Söllereck on the German side.

Skiing in the German Alps

If you do not want to miss the alpine feeling you should visit the Bavarian Alps and its many ski resorts. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Spitzingsee-Tegernsee, Reit im Winkl and Bauneck/Lenggries are among the most popular and most visited regions.

Many winter sport fans want to experience skiing on Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze (2962 m), where they are rewarded with a significant sight over the Alps. Roughly 300 m beneath the peak the Zugspitze glacier presents the highest German ski resort with beautiful slopes for all skill levels.
