The Allgaeu offers ideal skiing and snowboarding conditions. Due to its elevation the Allgaeu Alps excite winter sport fans with thick covers of snow. But even the pre-alpine slopes provide slopes for skiers of every skill level. 800 km of slopes wait to be explored in the Allgaeu.

The 10 Most Beautiful ski resorts in the Allgaeu Region

Panorama of ski slopes

Skiarena Steibis
Winter sports enthusiasts will find over 20 kilometers of slopes of varying difficulty in the Steibis ski arena. Thanks to the altitude of up to 1500 m, the skiing area near Oberstaufen is particularly snow-sure. The modern snow-making facilities contribute to this. Skiing beginners can take part in a skiing course and the little guests are looked after in the “Skikinderland Imberg.”

Hochgrat
The Hochgrat ski area is located in the middle of the Nagelfluhkette and is accessed from Oberstaufen. Advanced skiers who prefer steeper descents will get their money's worth on the two challenging ski routes. Tobogganers will be delighted with the toboggan run that leads from the mountain station of the Hochgratbahn in a wide arc down to the valley.

Ski resorts at the German-Austrian border

The region’s most popular and biggest ski resorts surround Oberstdorf – the southernmost point in Germany. Oberstdorf provides three different ski resorts:

The Allgaeu’s highest winter sport resort on top of the Nebelhorn scores with its 7.5 km long valley descent that leads directly into the town. The station Höfatsblick excites snowboarders with a superpipe – a halfpipe of such dimensions that it attracts snowboarders from all over Europe.

The transnational ski resort Fellhorn/Kanzelwand is one of Germany’s biggest winter sport destinations with 40 km of slopes. Modern snow-making facilities secure good snow conditions. Free riders enjoy the Fellhorn Easypark and the Crystal Ground near Kanzelwand Station.

Families prefer the Söllereck due to its beginner- and children-friendly slopes. Parents can enjoy the slopes while their kids play at the all-seasonal-playground.

Next to those three ski resorts the winter sport destinations of Ifen and Walmendingerhorn are part of the transnational ski region “Das Höchste”. However, they are not located in the Allgaeu, but entirely in Austria’s Kleinwalsertal.

The Söllereck is particularly popular with families and is considered particularly child-friendly due to its beginner-friendly slopes. So parents can enjoy the slopes with a clear conscience while children take their first turns or romp around in the all-season playground.

In addition to these three ski areas, the two ski areas at Ifen and Walmendingerhorn are part of the two-country ski region „OK Bergbahnen“. However, these are not located in the Allgäu, but entirely in Kleinwalsertal in Austria.

Ski resorts for beginners and families

The ski resorts of Ofterschwang, Balderschwang and Bolsterlang provide perfectly prepared slopes and beautiful panoramic views. Balderschwang is considered to be the ski resort with the best chances of snow in all of Germany. Moreover, it is very family-friendly.

There are also numerous of smaller ski resorts that are ideal for beginners and families. The “Skiarena Steibis” and the ski lift Hündle-Thalkirchdorf is located near Oberstaufen as well as the Mittag ski center and the Grünten lifts.

The ski paradise Grasgehren at Riedbergpass or the Oberjoch near Bad Hindelang are popular destinations for winter sport fans in the Allgaeu. Boardercross and Funpark in Grasgehren excite skilled skiers whereas the easy to medium slopes at Oberjoch are ideal for beginners.

If you want to ski on King Ludwig II traces, should visit the Tegelberg. Other popular and family-friendly winter sport destination near Pfronte, Füssen and Schwangau are Breitenberg, the ski resort Halblech-Buching or the ski lifts of Gerhalde in Oy-Mittelberg.

Skiing in the Allgaeu: guaranteed variety

There many other ski resorts in the Allgaeu region that provide good conditions for winter sport enthusiasts. For example, the hidden region of Eschach west of Kempten, Isny, Sinswang or Weiler-Simmerberg. Every resort has different qualities depending on a winter sport fan’s priorities.

Unlimited skiing fun with the ski pass

For those who want to get the most out of their skiing in general, it is worth buying a ski pass. Depending on the option you choose, you can use various ski areas. With a ski pass, you no longer have to queue up at the ticket office every time you want to go, but you can simply get on the lift and head for the slopes!
