The winter transforms the ravine Breitachklamm into a landscape of ice and snow. A very different experience from a hike during the summer months.
On the path through the Breitachklamm in the winter we experience frozen waterfalls, curtains of ice, countless icicles and snow-covered cliffs. In the cold months the otherwise whooshing ravine seems to freeze entirely. On the footbridge Zwingsteg you can guess how powerful the water must have been, which once shaped this ravine. There are different possibilities to stop and enjoy a snack or meal on this tour: Gasthof Breitachklamm, Grenzgasthof Walserschanz and Alpe Dornach.
The local speciality "Kaiserschmarren" (sugared pancake with raisins, plucked into pieces) at the Alpe Dornach is very good!
We turn right from the parking area and after a short distance we reach the ravine Breitachklamm. We now hike alongside river Breitach on a path which becomes quite narrow. We cross the river on a bridge and follow its stream on the other side. After about 2 km and an easy rise we reach the top entrance of the ravine, from where the tour can be taken into the opposite direction. We stay on the left side of the river and walk upwards, then we pass the Grenzgasthof Walserschanz. On this section upwards we cross the Zwingsteg after about 3 kmand climb up to a height of 966 m on serpentines through the forest. Moments later we spot the Alpe Dornach. We pass it and take the slighty steep trail downwards on the right side of the alpine hut. Arrived below we turn right and soon reach our starting point Gasthaus Breitachklammm.
