Mindelheim via ferrata above the Kleinwalsertal valley

Track types
Safety information
Despite good securing by means of ropes and ladders, there are some unsecured rock passages to overcome. The length and exposure of the route require good concentration and fitness, as well as a head for heights. Via ferrata routes are particularly prone to lightning strikes and should therefore only be undertaken in good weather. Caution is also advised in wet conditions - danger of slipping!Tips and hints

Start
Turn-by-turn directions
This starts right away with the key section - an almost 10 m high, overhanging wall (C in places), which can be overcome by means of stirrups and iron pins. Now we have the most difficult part of the climb behind us, but the rest of the way is still not boring. Via a sloping ladder (A/B) and a few metres of unsecured scrambling (I, UIAA) we climb up to the northernmost of the three Schafalpenköpfe. In the further course, which leads us along the ridge (A/B, B/C, B) over the other two Schafalpköpfe as well as the Kemptner Köpfle, climbing passages alternate with walking. We already descend through a 20 m high steep drop with iron pins, soon cross a 3-4 m wide rock gap on a lying ladder that serves as an iron bridge and climb down a slightly overhanging rock face (mostly A/B). In between, we are offered imposing views down into the Wildental. Through a chimney and over a slab inclined at about 60 degrees, we now climb up to the Mittlerer Schafalpenkopf, where a magnificent view over the Wilden and Rappental valleys to the Allgäu main ridge awaits us. To get back down, we climb down a wall with iron clamps after a few hairpin bends, then climb another pointed rock needle and descend again to the ridge with the help of iron needles in the rock. The crossing of the southern Schafalpenkopf, which also offers an impressive mountain panorama despite its lower altitude, is easier, only shortly before the exit from the path there is a tricky spot to overcome: we climb down a 20 m high, almost vertical rock slab with some iron pins (A/B), then the scrambling is over. Now we continue on comfortable paths over the Kemptner Köpfle before we reach our destination, the Mindelheimer Hütte.
After a refreshment, we return to the car park in Schwendle through the Kemptner Scharte, via the Hintere Wildalpe and the Fluchtalpe.
