An easy stroll through Parco Miralago, to Riva del Garda, where the famous sanatorium of Doctor Von Hartungen stood at the turn of the 20th century.
The Sanatorium von Hartungen, which was open from 1895 to 1915, played a special part in the recent history of Riva del Garda. Founded by the Viennese physician Christoph von Hartungen, a doctor and homeopath and pioneer of natural treatments, the sanatorium soon earned itself an international reputation and drew a wealthy clientele. Guests included numerous literary figures of the Belle Époque, including Franz Kafka, Max Brod and the brothers Heinrich and Thomas Mann, who underwent what t the time were avant garde treatments. The sanatorium was in fact specialised in hygiene and homeopathy treatments like the “Terrainkuren”, based on physical exercise, diet and constant exposure to the strong winds of Lake Garda.
This itinerary winds through the Parco Miralago, in the area occupied by the sanatorium between 1895 and 1915. The main buildings are still standing today and give us an idea of how imposing the clinic complex must have been.
You are now near the lake so you could always continue your stroll along the beach of Riva del Garda.
The telephone number for the emergency services is 112.
