Sorrent‘s steep coast offers spectacular views over the Mediterranean and the coast trip until Salerno
This coast street nestles on the cliff coast of Sorrent in Campania, stretching from the small town of Piano di Sorrento for about 50 km to the commune of Vietri sul Mare, just a few kilometers from the coastal city of Salerno.
Amalfitana is bordered by picturesque vineyards, with the delicate scent of lemon in the air. This is where you can also find several sight spots such as the Bay of Sorrent, the coastal villages of Positano and Ravello as well as the stunning Grotta dello Smeraldo.
But beware: You should only go on this tour if you are an experiences driver. There are several hairpin bends and narrow serpentine roads, so you might need to give way to oncoming traffic. You shouldn’t be afraid of heights either. The ledges might be impressive and nice to look at, but you might feel giddy when passing them by.
As there’s always a lot of traffic, try to avoid rush hour and start in the early morning.
The stretch between Vietri sul Mare and Positano is forbidden from 6.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. for caravans, trailers and mobile homes. Buses higher than 4 meters or longer than 10,36 meters aren’t allowed either. Those excluded from the prohibition are regular service buses and local tourism companies.
For the stopovers along the road you’ll need sturdy shoes with a good profile, warm clothes and rainwear. In the summer time you should also carry sun protection (headgear, sun cream).
We recommend you to visit Costiera Amalfitana in late spring or autumn. From June onwards (especially in August) most people go on holiday, so you should avoid this season in order to enjoy the trip. Besides, you’ll feel more comfortable when avoiding the high temperatures of the summer time.
From the airport of Naples (“Aeroporto di Napoli-Capodichino“) via E35 and SS145to the small town of Piano di Sorrent (total length: approx. 50 km; duration: approx. 1 hour).
Alongside Amalfitana Road there are signposted parking areas.
