The Vía de la Plata is an alternative route, or secondary itinerary, of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It crosses the west of Spain from south to north, starting in Seville, and passes through 4 regions (Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla y Leon, Asturias) and 7 provinces, over a distance of about 800km. The route follows an ancient Roman road, built to facilitate the gold trade.
The Spanish State and local authorities have enhanced the value of this route by making it accessible for cycle tourism and mountain biking, to our great delight. Here we present the route in 12 stages (the route differs depending on whether you are on a road bike or a mountain bike).

Stage 11 (road bike): from León to Pola de Lena
For this stage, it is important to wear lights, as we will have to cross some tunnels and find quite heavy traffic, especially with heavy trucks avoiding the A-66 highway.<After leaving Leon, and having appreciated the magnificent stained glass windows of Cathedral, we pass through historic quarter its walls, then more modern districts with their administrative buildings.
After about twenty kilometres, we arrive in La Robla, from where the famous La Robla railway starts, one of the most emblematic lines in Spain that crosses the north of the country. We then follow the N-630, which we will not leave until we reach Campomanes.
A little further on, at La Pola de Gordon, we pass through the town with its emblazoned houses, where we can find all kinds of services. Returning to the N-630, we go through four tunnels, with no alternative. At this point we are immersed in the Cantabrian mountain range, with its narrow valleys, meadows, woods and rocks above, which compete in whiteness with the snow that covers them.
At El Pajares, a deep valley opens up in front of us and Asturias greets us, with the Ubiñas massif at more than 2,400 metres above sea level facing us. The descent a little further on is to be taken with great care, with gradients of up to 17%, and quite a lot of traffic.
Once the descent is complete, we can ride placidly again to Campomanes, where we divert to the left to reach Lena, the final destination of our stage.
