As the Oberalp pass was covered in snow, we took the train to Andermatt and walked along the Reuss to Realp.
Distance 17.1 km
This side of the Oberalp pass was covered in snow, making the path down impossible, and so we took the train to Andermatt, had a look round, and continued from there. An interesting plaque commemorated a visit by the last of Ireland's princes in 1608. We headed out of Andermatt along the Reuss, crossing old bridges, past pleasant meadows grazed by sheep to a village boasting to be the smallest in Switzerland. From there along a section of road to Realp train station to return to Disentis and thence our base. Realp is also the start of the cog railway to the Furka pass, used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. The Furka Pass at 2429 metres, connects with Realp in the canton of Uri with Gletsch, in the canton of Valais, but was officially closed for the winter season.
