Via Romea Germanica
Between the 7th and the 8th century, due to continued invasions which devastated Voghenza, the Bishop’s see was moved from this town to Borgo San Giorgio, situated on the right bank of the River Po, right opposite the 6th century Byzantine fort, which was on the left bank. This was the first settlement on the site of Ferrara, where is now the ancient cathedral of St Giorgio outside the walls. In the Romanesque age the city started its expansion on the opposite bank of the Po putting Borgo San Giorgio in the shadow.
