The Scenic or Valley Drive leads through Monument Valley past the most famous rock formations.
On the Scenic Drive you can drive through the Monument Valley in your private car. The cost of entering Monument Valley is paid at the Visitor Center, but you can then drive along the marked path on your own. The good thing is that you can take as much time as you want to see the impressive rock formations and take pictures. Those who want to learn more about the history of the country and its inhabitants should perhaps join a guided tour or visit the Visitor Center or Goulding's Museum.
Be sure to stay on the road during the trip. Also hiking in the desert is not allowed. So only get out to watch. On the Scenic Drive, one passes the most famous rocks. Directly from the Visitor Center we look at the Mittens and the Merrick Butte, the famous triumvirate. On the further way we pass Elephant and Camel Butte, the Three Sisters and the Totem Pole.
Keep the windows closed, otherwise the desert will spread inside the car.
The best way is to drive a minivan or SUV. For some cars the bumpy track is a challenge. Take enough drinking water with you.
In case of rain the Valley Drive may not be passable.
The speed limit is 15 mph, so about 24 km/h.
