The marginal formations are glaciofluvial deltas which accumulated at the edge of the continental ice sheet and consist of sand and gravel deposited by the ice sheet’s meltwater. Marginal formations may also contain mixed quaternary deposits, or till, moved and piled up by the ice sheet. Vuoksenniska’s residential and school area is built on the First Salpausselkä formation, deposited along the margin of the continental ice sheet. There are Saimaa Geopark signs in the parking areas of Vuoksenniska school area and along the path, which provide information on the geology of the area e.g. deltas, marginal-moraine ridges, rock types and kettle holes.

Tips and hints
Follow the blue signs (painted markings, arrows) and cone signs along the route. The signs are incomplete at times.
One of Saimaa Geopark’s nature and cultural sites in Imatra is the Church of the Three Crosses, a church designed by Alvar Aalto and built on top of the First Salpausselkä. The church can be reached from the Vuoksenniska forest path, taking the route that leads to the marginal moraine ridge and then continuing towards the church.
