Punkaharju is a scenic nature reserve in the embrace of ridges and lakes, offering excellent opportunities for variable length walks. The Kuikko Salpa Trail is a short, less than a kilometre long, easy to navigate trail. Along this trail you can explore the restored dugout and Punkaharju trenches, which you can walk on your own. After exploring the history of the area you can dip into the lake with from the sandy beach which is just off the trail.
This short trail is family friendly and an easy way for children to get to know the history of the area. The trail starts at the stop at Kuikonniemi. In the Harjutie parking area you will find a kiosk that sells coffee, drinks and other snacks. There is also a toilet. The kiosk also gives you the key to visit the dugout.
The route is marked with orange paint symbols. There is no winter maintenance on the trail.

There are good bus connections between Savonlinna and Punkaharju. You can check up-to-date schedules here. Get off the buss at the Harju Area (Harjualue) stop, and you are close to the starting point. You can also reach Punkaharju from Helsinki or Savonlinna by train, check the schedules here. The train stops at Lusto station, from where it´s about 4 km to Kuikonnimi and the trail.
