I did this hike with the Munich Hikng Buddies. We started in Munich and took the train south to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From there we switched trains to the Zugspitzebahn which took us to the starting point of the hike at Hammersbach.
The Höllentalklamm is a natural wonder in itself with clear ice cold water gushing through the narrow canyon. There is a price to enter (4 Euros for adults, 1 Euro for DAV members I believe). After the klamm, we reached the Höllentalanger Hütte where we recharged with Weissbier.
The next section quickly becomes steep with some rocky sections of scree. We pushed on and made the final climb to Südliche Riffelspitze. We made lunch on the top and enjoyed the views over the Eibsee.
After the peak, the path leads to a meadow. Laying down in the grass for a short nap was just what I needed :)
The next section is steep, I mean really steep. It is a B Klettersteig and we saw a couple wearing Klettersteig sets for the descent. We all felt comfortable without equipment.
We ended the hike at the Eibsee with a swim and more beer. Another great day in the Alps.
