This tour starts at the Popradské Pleso station of the Tatra Electric Railway (TEZ). Alternatively, there is a huge car park here for 6€ per day. We will follow the blue sign through the entire day, apart from the final ascent to the mountain.
A 4.5 km long constantly ascending asphalt road leads through the magical forests until the lake of Popradské pleso. Here we turn onto a narrower path, the terrain gets rockier but we still walk in the pine forests. Dwarf pines follow and after half an hour we reach a junction and take the left route towards the Veľké Hincovo pleso, and Koprovsky stit (while the right side is leading to the summit of the Rysy). It is worth looking back at the Mengusovská valley from the clearings on the way up.
The path crosses numerous crystal-clear mountain streams, and after some climbing we reach the dark emerald blue lake of Veľké Hincovo pleso, which is the biggest and deepest lake of the Slovakian side of the High Tatras.
The tour is constantly uphill from this point: steep zigzagging is leading up to the saddle of Vyšné Kôprovské sedlo (2180m), rocks are getting bigger and bigger, and finally dark grey granite blocks and rugged mountain ridges will lead to the top. The views of the Hincov lakes, the northern valleys, the peaks of Swinica, Rysy, Vysoká are simply breathtaking.
This tour requires fitness and stamina. Although being technically easy, note that once you are not staying at the Popradské pleso overnight, the tour gets considerably longer than generally reported. The length and the level rise can pose a challenge to anyone. This is a one-day hike, so make sure to arrive early, and start your hike before 8am.
