The Schrecksee is well known in the Allgäu, as one of the most beautiful mountain lakes ever, but only a handful of people know the view from the Kastenkopf above the Schrecksee.
The way up to the Kastenkopf is really diversified. From normal fields where you start over a nice forest where you make almost half of the heights. After the forest you walk on a more or less flat field to a steep wall. When you reach the wall you have to make a lot of height on a gravel path. But for all the effort you put in you will get a better and better view with each step you make. After the "Wallclimbing" you are in the summer residence of the cows. So you see some cows and it is the last part to the Schrecksee. Once you are at the Schrecksee take a deep breath because you almost have it. Just go around the Schrecksee and walk up the Jubiläumsweg. Unless you see the Lahnerscharte stay on the way. If you almost reached the Lahnerscharte you have to go left on a meadow and just walk up there. You can see the cross on the summit the most time so you can't lose the direction. If you reached the Summit it's an incredibel view 360° and a perfect view above the Schrecksee.
It's alway good to take safe steps. At least pay attention at the last part because there is just a small path and some steps without a path.
You should take mountain shoes and if you don't have them take really hard trekking shoes. Also it's good to have enough water and weatherproof clothes.
You can drive with the car until Hinterstein and it will take about ten minutes from Bad Hindelang and about twenty minutes from Sonthofen. After that you need to go with a chargeable bus further 12 minutes to reach the busstop Roßhütte.
There is a chargeable parking in Hinterstein
