The Bettelwurf - no other mountain dominates the Hall-Wattens region so dramatically as the Bettelwurf massif.
difficult
Distance 21.7 km
The crossing from the Kleiner Bettelwurf to the Grosser Bettelwurf can justifiably be described as one of the most satisfying in the Karwendel range.
Author’s recommendation
Start very early because the route is south facing!

Turn-by-turn directions
Starting from the car-park in the Hall valley (Absam), at the second "Ladhütte" (a shed dating from the salt-mining era), a path leads off to the northeast to the bridge over the Weissenbach. Follow signs on this path to the Bettelwurfhütte. The path winds its way uphill over the rubble field towards the Wechselscharte, which you leave on the left-hand side as you follow the path. You will be accompanied all the way to the Bettelwurf mountain hut (2,079m) by fields of mountain pines. Head north behind the Bettelwurf hut on small waymarkers. The path leads up to the first belts of rock. It is well-marked and there are safety wires.
The path runs up to the saddle between the Kleiner Bettelwurf (2,469m) and the Grosser Bettelwurf (2,725m). Heading west across coarse scree and rocky steps, you will reach the summit of the Kleiner Bettelwurf. After the descent to the saddle, there is a lofty, exposed climb, but passage is eased by a wire cable. There are two walls, interrupted by a dihedral crack, to negotiate, before a short scramble along the ridge to the summit of the Grosser Bettwelwurf. The simpler descent is via the normal route, the rope-secured southern flank down to the Eisengattergrat. Waymarkings show the route back down into the valley - it's hard to go wrong.
