Route summary: A hilly route that explores some lesser visited valleys that are home to some fun and rocky trails. Never very remote, but has a feeling of being away from civilisation
Distance 33.4 km
Car park, Glyn Ceiriog (grid ref SJ 204/379, postcode LL20 7HE)
The Ceiriog Valley and Vale of Llangollen are often overlooked in favour of the manmade trails at Llandegla. But this hilly area has some great trails, from mile-munching farmland tracks to challenging rocky descents. The rocky trails fare well in the wet but the farm tracks can get mucky and hard going.
Head west off the M6 at Wolverhampton on the M54 to Telford, then take the A5 past Shrewsbury to Oswestry. Go right at the roundabout to continue following the A5 north. At the third roundabout turn left to join the B5070 to Chirk, then turn left on the B4500 to Glyn Ceiriog. Park in the community centre car park on the right.

Head right out of the car park, along New Road. Go left at the roundabout, cross the bridge and turn right, uphill. Bear right by Pant Farm. Keep ahead/right at the fork and continue over the hilltop. Just past Spring Hill Farm, turn right, off road, where the road bears left.
Continue uphill/left, through a gate and field. Descend to the junction and turn left. Keep ahead on a faint track after a kink in the trail as you enter the trees. Go left at the T-junction, to a track crossing. Turn left here, uphill.
Keep ahead, down to a farm. Go right on the road, then fork left, uphill. Keep ahead/right, following the trail down to the main road. Turn left on the road, then, shortly afterwards, turn right and then left on a bridleway, which heads downhill and becomes rocky. Turn right at the bottom, uphill. Head over the road at the top and then go left at/on the next road.
Keep ahead to join a right of way that takes you downhill towards the road, becoming rockier as it goes. Turn left down another track, then left on the road. Take the next right and go over the main road at the bottom. Head uphill, then fork right down a track that heads off road past a house. Keep left along the lower track.
Turn right past a house and left around the back of another. Keep right, heading uphill on a right of way to a road. Go right on this, then take the next left, uphill. Head over a crossroads and then over the next junction, on to a byway opposite. Head downhill on this until you reach a junction after a sharp right-hand bend. Turn sharp left here, uphill. Go through a gate and a wood, up to and right on a road.
Take the second road on the left, downhill. Look out for a sharp left turn (Pontfadog) and take this to join a hidden bridleway on the right, just before the bends. Follow this variable trail as it heads steeply downhill to a lane by a farm. Turn right on this.
Go uphill, past another farm. Turn left, then keep ahead, heading downhill and over a road. Go right at the next road, along the bottom of the valley. Turn left immediately after a bridge and join the B4500 back to Glyn Ceiriog.
