Starting in Cardingmill Valley, this is a great circular mountain bike route taking in Pole Bank, the top of the Long Mynd.
Distance 17.5 km
Pole Bank is the highest point on the rather featureless top of the Long Mynd. It's possible to drive (and indeed cycle) most of the way up it from Church Stretton via The Burway, but much more fun to get off the road - and this is definitely a mountain bike route. It starts at the National Trust car park in Cardingmill Valley (great cafe), then after a rather trying initial ascent from All Stretton (walking permitted!) you enjoy the low gears on a steady pull to the top. Then the prize - hit the big gears for a zooming descent, virtually all off road, down the ridge above Ashes Hollow finishing with a steep descent to Little Stretton. The last road section then seems easy and tea in the cafe is a fitting reward for your efforts.
