Excellent ride with lots of variety and few busy roads. It starts with a short stretch on the canal There is a long off-road climb half way to Redbourn which is likely to be muddy in winter. The second half is fairly easy going until the off-road climb to Ashridge forest, although some of the tracks can be bumby when dry.
The off-road downhill followed by the uphill climb to Ashridge is best avoided in winter conditions - take the shorter road option. Quite a long ride so you won’t get much change out of 3- 3.5 hours saddle (moving) time so best to allow a whole day
Limited refreshment stops after Redbourn - pub at Studham if you dont take the shorter road option
Highlights include the Grand Union Canal, Berkhamsted Castle, the now disused Nickey Line (excellent for cycling), the Hub cycle friendly cafe in Redbourne, Ashridge Forest and Bridgwater Monument.
The toughest hills are off-road climb half-way to Redbourn and the off-raod climb back up to Ashridge Forest, but there is a road alternative for both - recommended in winter conditions
