Excellent ride with lots of variety and few busy roads. After the initial stretch on the canal the first half is mostly roads to Redbourn; then the second half is a mix of mostly good tracks and quieter roads and good off-road once you reach Ashridge.. Quite a long ride so you won’t get much change out of 3.5 - 4 hours saddle (moving) time so best to allow a whole day
Highlights include the Grand Union Canal, Berkhamsted Castle, the now disused Nickey Line (excellent for cycling), the Hub cycle friendly cafe in Redbourne, Ashridge Forest and Bridgwater Monument.
The toughest hills are the climb out of Berkhamsted near the beginning (on road) but there is another good hill (off-road) before you reach Redbourn for a coffee stop.
The only stretch likely to cause you problems in winter or wet conditions is in the middle of the second half and is shown on the map.
