Short but technically demanding tour with views over lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains.
The Rocher de Naye (2042) is the highest railway in the Canton Vaud and provides you with easy access to a 1500m descent with the majority of it on moderately technical singletrail. The top of the route is quite high alpine in nature and does feature some exposure in places. The upper high alpine section is split from the lower woodland section by a couple of kilometers of fire road. The woodland section is quite tight and narrow and requires good brake control. The lowest section of the trail features a number of switchbacks which had been straighlined the last time we rode the route. Please respect the trail and do not take shortcuts. On weekends there is likely to be a lot of hikers on the top sections of the trail.
Please be respectfull of the hikers that you will find on this trail.
From the top of the cogwheel railway take the trail on the south side of the mountain towards Sautodoz. The top section of the trail is loose and the terrain is quite steep to the side. As you get a little further down the mountain the trail becomes a little wider but there are still a number of places which are quite exposed and a fall would not be wise.
Keep following the same trail down past Les Dentaux and on to Creux a la Cierge. Here you will join the fire road that runs to the north as far as Liboson d'en Haut. There is a trail the drops into the woods at this point. At times the trail is steep and narrow and requires good brake control to be able to ride cleanly. The trail drops onto the fire road at Liboson d'en Bas and continues on the other side of the road where it passes some small buildings. Once again the trail is quite narrow in places and the exit of the trail onto the fire road near Sorebenne was in very poor condition and not safely rideable when we did the tour.
From here follow the fire road downhill about 600-700m where you will see a trail drop into the woods on the right. This section of trail is steep and tight with some very close switchbacks. In places a line has been made straighling these switchbacks. Please respect the trail and don't take the straight line. The lowest section of the trail is through a Vita Parcours where mountain bikers are asked to push their bikes. Please respect this so as to ensure that we won't be banned from the Rocher de Naye in the future.
Once back on paved road ride back to the train station in Montreux and/or enjoy a drink by the lake.
