Kukastunturin polkaisu MTB
From Äkäshotelli, the trail runs through a pine forest to the Hormistonjänkä duckboards, which you can walk your bike across. The trail is rocky in places and continues through old-growth forests until you come to Hangaskuru hut. Roast some snacks over a campfire and enjoy the view towards the beautiful Kesänkitunturi Fell.
The long ascent leading to the top of Kukastunturi Fell begins from the café at Kotamaja hut. The slope becomes gentler as you near the top, and the surrounding landscape gradually opens up around you. Above the tree line, the lichen-covered rocks put on a miniature display of beauty.
The top of the Fell provides far-reaching views and plenty of space to breathe. You’re surrounded by the other six fells of Ylläs as well as raw arctic nature. Just imagine how beautiful the midnight sun looks from here!
The rest of the trail is a reward for all the climbing done so far. A gravel trail takes you all the way down to the village of Äkäslompolo. What a great experience!

Safety information
The weather can change rapidly on the fell, and visibility can deteriorate very quickly. Always prepare for cold and rain; you should be prepared for wintery conditions in spring and autumn even if the weather is warm when you set off.
Mobile phone reception is not available on all hiking routes. The signal is usually better in higher and more open terrain. Download the 112 Finland application free of charge and activate it before starting your hike. Remember that mobile phone batteries run down quickly in cold conditions.

Equipment
Dress according to the weather and choose footwear that is suitable for varied terrain.
Take something to eat, a drink, warm clothing, a fully charged phone, matches, toilet paper, a map, a first aid kit and a rubbish bag with you.
Finnish tap water is very clean. Fill your water bottles before starting out, because you may not necessarily have access to natural water. The availability of natural water varies, and each person uses it at their own risk.
During the summer, protect yourself from mosquitoes with clothing that covers your skin, a mosquito hat and insect repellent.
Bicycle repair supplies and skills are necessary, because the trails are often located far away from roads and services.
