Distance: 44.7 km (27.8 miles).
Time: 2hrs 30mins to 4hrs.
Ingleborough is the second highest hill in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the riding here is on bridleways and country lanes but the views are impressive and there are some good hills to tackle too. The area is exposed and quiet, so go prepared.
Ingleborough Community Centre car park (grid ref SD 695/730, postcode LA6 3HG).
Ingleton is off the A65, between Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale, east of Lancaster on the M6. From the south, leave the motorway at junction 34 and follow the A683. From the north, exit at junction 36 and follow the A65. Parking is in the centre of town, by the community centre.

Places to stay include Bridge End Guest House (01524 241413) and Ingleton YHA (0345 371 9124, www.yha.org.uk). The Curlew Crafts tearoom is just along from the finish (01524 241608). There’s a pub in Ribblehead, The Station Inn (01524 241274, http://thestationinn.net), and another just off the route in Clapham, The New Inn (01524 251203, http://newinn-clapham.co.uk).
Turn right out of the car park, under the railway bridge. Fork left, downhill, and then go left, over the bridge. Turn right on Oddles Lane, behind the Bridge End Guest House. Climb for over 1km, then bear off left, through a gate and onto a tarmac lane. At Twisleton Hall, bear left.
After a short distance, bear off right on the Twistleton Scar End bridleway. Climb up the steep hillside, turning sharply to the right at the footpath up onto the moors. Follow this obvious track along the top for around 6km. Pass Ivescar Farm and continue for a few hundred metres more, then turn right on a track to Gunnerfleet Farm.
The track on the left here, by the farm, heads out to the foot of the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct, if you want to do some sightseeing. Otherwise, keep ahead/right to join a road past a gate. Go left on this, to the B6255. Follow the main road to the left for 1.5km. Pass under the railway and pub, then go right on Gauber Road (B6479). Follow this for 4km, to Selside. Continue along the road for another 1km, then turn right, towards South House.
After a short distance, turn off right on a bridleway through some gates. Cross the ford and bear left. Follow this main track until you eventually join a surfaced track. Follow it past a wood and then right, down to Ingleborough Hall. Turn right, past the church, into Clapham.
Turn right again, after the church, and follow the road as it turns sharply to the left. Go straight over the crossroads, then bear right at the junction. After a short distance, turn off left on a bridleway (far left of the two gates). Continue to follow this track (it becomes grassy in the middle section) until you reach a road at the end. Turn right here.
Turn left on the B-road at Newby Cote and follow it back towards Ingleton. If you want to do the optional out-and-back ride to the summit of Ingleborough, look out for a bridleway on the right, opposite the cemetery and through some gates (if you don’t, continue ahead and go left on the B6255). Keep left past the buildings and climb to a good track (Fell Lane). Turn right here, climb all the way to the top and then blast back down. Continue straight ahead/left on the B6255 and then turn right, back into the (signed) car park.
