At just under 17 miles, this there and back ride is very easy to follow. Using mainly a disused railway track along the Manifold valley that has a tarmac surface. Only a short section on-road.
Distance 27.1 km
The Manifold Trail runs from Waterhouses to Hulme End and has a car park and toilets at both ends. Although mainly flat, there are more up gradients going to Hulme End and so Waterhouses makes a better start point. There are cafes a both ends as well as along the way. The main stop for most folk being at Wettonmill. There is a short on-road section after Wettonmill towards Hulme End of about one and a quarter miles with a 150 yard tunnel at the end. Bike lights help to be seen but it is not a dark tunnel (see photo). The ride through the valley, by the river is very pleasent. However, the river is not always visible as it disappears underground in dry periods from Wettomill onwards towards Waterhouses.
