The city of Savonlinna formed on the islands surrounding the Olavinlinna Castle since the completion of the castle's construction in 1475. The archipelago life in Lake Saimaa and the challenges and opportunities it creates, has always been part of the local way of life. Ice roads are important gateways between islands and the mainland. Today, ice roads provide a chance to save on ferry costs, and enable the islands’ inhabitants to move more freely. Along an ice road, the distance to the city centre can be shortened even by more than 50 kilometres.

Experience the magic of winter cycling by cycling along the important ice roads of Lake Saimaa! The ice route in the archipelago starts from the marketplace in the centre of Savonlinna and continues along a cycle path or a road towards the first ice road (2.8 km) and then towards the Iso-Kankainen island (at about 13 km at the route). To the south of the island, there is a campfire site where you can take a lunch break and roast sausages. The route passes through the island to another section of ice road (3.5 km) and towards the next island, Laukansaari. Cycle along a snow-plowed road towards the third section of the ice road (2.4 km) that ends on the mainland.

From the mainland, the route continues along roads and cycle paths towards the centre of Savonlinna. On the way, you cross the magnificent Laitaatsalmi Bridge which is 500 m long and 24.5 meters high. From there, you can admire the scenery over the deep water route and the Laitaatsalmi shipyard to Lake Saimaa.

Author’s recommendation

This route is especially charming when the weather is sunny! In addition to good spirits, take a packet with sausages with you and enjoy a snack on an island.

Safety information

Make sure you stay on the ice road! Diverting from the ice road can be very dangerous, because for example currents and winds affect the thickness and durability of the ice off the ice road.

The ice route can in places be really slippery, especially if the sun has melted ice or snow, and new snow has fallen on it.

There can be chasms in the ice of the ice road, and water may rise on the road in places.

Please also note that the ice and weather conditions can vary greatly. For example, a strong headwind at the lake can bring additional challenges to cycling along the route.

You always move on the ice route at your own risk. Please make sure you wear a cycling helmet. We recommend an electric bike and studded tires.

Note! If you are driving by car on an ice road, the absolute speed limit is 30 km / hour because driving causes a wave that moves the ice under the ice.

Tips and hints

You can rent a fatbike or an electric fatbike with studded tires from Activity Maker in the Savonlinna city centre.

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting point of the route is the Savonlinna Market Square, and from there, it continues from Tottinkatu street to Punkaharjuntie road. After cycling for about a kilometre, you will cross the railway bridge, from where there is a good view towards the Olavinlinna Castle. The route then continues towards the Schaumanintie road. You will continue along the cycle path by the Schaumanintie road until the road forks to the right at about 3.6 km from the start of the route to the cycle path by Kaartilantie road. Along the cycle path, you will continue across Inkilänkatu street all the way until Nätki school, where the road changes to Hirvastie road. At about 5.8 km you will turn right to Moinsalmentie road. The journey continues along Moinsalmentie road, from where you turn right to Rantakaartilantie road at about 7.3 km. Continue along Rantakaartilantie road.  From there, the route turns right (Rossilahdentie road) towards the shore at about 9.6 km from the start. This is where the first leg of the ice road begins.

The first section of the ice road is about 2.8 km long, ending on the Iso-Kankainen island. The island is about 200 m wide, and there is a good place to take a break and enjoy snacks around the campfire. From there, the journey continues to another section of the ice road. The length of the second section of the ice road is about 3.5 km. This section of the ice road ends on Laukansaari island, at about 16.5 km from the start. From the shore, you continue along a small forest road for about 500 m, after which you turn right onto Laukansaarentie road. From there, the journey continues for about 3 km to the third stretch of the ice road. The third ice road is about 2.5 km ending on the mainland at Ruunanvuorentie road. So far, the distance cycled is about 22.5 km.

Ruunanvuorentie road turns left after the intersection of Nuottamiehentie road. However, continue along the same road, which is now called Kaivoniityntie road. At the end of the road, at about 26 km from the start, turn left to Kuusniementie road. Continue along this road for about 1.6 km and thereafter turn right to the cycle path by Poukkusalmentie road. At 28.7 km you will arrive at a roundabout, from you continue to the right onto the cycle path by Laivamiehentie road and towards the magnificent Laitaatsalmi bridge. After the bridge, at about 30 km from the start, continue onto the cycle path by Savontie road. Continue for about 1.5 km and at Citymarket, turn right and continue through the parking area along the shore and turn right onto Talvisalonkatu street at about 32 km from the start. After about 100 m from there turn right to Pilkkakoskenkatu street that changes to Kirkkolahdenkatu street after a bend. At the end of the street, turn left onto Kirkkokatu street, and immediately at the next junction down to the right along Sääminginkatu street onto Puistokatu street. From Puistokatu street, you will already see the starting point: Cross the Torisilta bridge across the Haapasalmi strait and at 32.6 km you are at the starting point at the Savonlinna Market Square.
