The trail description has been uploaded to the #Keski-Suomen retkeilyreitit maailmankartalle project, which was funded by the Central Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Most of the route is a hard-surfaced trail or sandy road, but some sections have a lot of rocks and tree roots, and also some duckboards. Differences in elevation in the terrain require a higher level of fitness. If necessary, you can shorten the route in some places by taking a shortcut along a sandy road. For example, you can leave out the sections that diverge from Syysniementie Road onto the forest paths and bike straight along the road. The shortcuts are not marked in the terrain, but they are easy to find on a map.
Part of the trail runs along the national park’s hiking trail. Please take other trail users into consideration: Maintaining a moderate speed in all situations makes it safe for everyone. Since bikers are moving at a faster speed, you should always be prepared to yield to other trail users.
There are two campsites on the trail, which are suitable for a short break or overnight camping. When the forest fire warning is in effect, fires are not allowed – even at the campfire sites.
Although the trail is marked in the terrain, always take a map of the area with you. Be sure to take a first aid kit. In case of an emergency, call the emergency number 112. How to use the emergency number 112 in Finland?
Remember to take enough fluids with you. The trail has no drinking water points. There is a natural spring beside Syysniementie Road, but the water quality is not tested regularly. You should always boil natural water before drinking it.
When coming from the south to Selänpohja, signposts to the national park begin at Leivonmäki town centre on main road 4 (Lahti - Jyväskylä), where you turn left onto Kivisuontie Road. After the Selänpohja buildings, follow the signs and turn right onto Syysniementie Road and then immediately turn right into the parking area of the national park.
