Sonogno, the last village in the Verzasca valley, can be reached by car or bus (Locarno-Tenero-Sonogno route). A path (asphalted as far as Secada) follows the Verzasca to Cabiói. Alternatively, if you're driving and intend to spend the night at the Capanna Barone, you could park in Cabiói, where the hike proper starts.
The ascent to the Corte di Fondo is moderate; cross the timber bridge and continue on the other side to the Corte della Pianca. The Alpe Vogornèss, which extends as far as the Lago Barone, provides summer grazing for cattle (its cheese is on sale on Corte di Piodoo or in Sonogno).
Now follow the rocky mountain flank to Piodoo and up to the Capanna Barone (June-October), which offers fantastic views of the valley and provides 32 berths, a WC/shower and cooking facilities. Beverages are available for sale. The little Lago Barone is a 30-minute climb away if you still have the energy. The following day's leg follows the same path down to Sonogno (worth a visit!).
