Even the Romans used the Plackweg to transport their goods through the Arnsberg Forest. Even today, we can still see traces of the old trade route on the hiking trail maintained by the Sauerland Mountain Association. It leads for long stretches along the ridge of the Plackweghöhe, which is up to 581 m high, and therefore has some challenging climbs in store for us - but for which we are rewarded with magnificent views, impressive castles, large caves and mysterious monasteries.

The Plackweg begins in the Hagen district of Delstern and leads past Holthausen up into the forest. We pass Hohenlimburg Castle and then walk above the long village of Nahmer to Nahmen Hasen. Then there are several steep climbs via Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde until we descend into Altena to cross the Lenne and visit Altena Castle. Now we head uphill again, through Nettenscheid and along the ridge up to the Großer Attig. Past the SGV memorial, the ups and downs continue. Near Leveringhausen, the forest clears for a short while, but soon has us firmly in its grip again and we hike under shady trees over the Gremberg and around the Steinradeberg. We then descend into the Hönne valley and cross the villages of Sanssouci and Volkringhausen - the former has nothing to do with the castle in Potsdam. Along the Hönne there are numerous exciting caves which we are welcome to visit. Passing through Eisborn, Herdringen (the Oelinghausen monastery is just outside the district) and Müschede, we reach
