The European long-distance hiking trail E10 runs from Finland to Spain. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, it runs from the island of Rügen through hilly moraine terrain, which was formed in the last ice age and is now home to incomparable nature, all the way to the Mecklenburg Lake District. The section across Germany's largest island of Rügen leads from Cape Arkona, through a picturesque landscape to the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, past "the white city" Putbus and on to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund.

Author’s recommendation

At Gelmer Ort there are unique views from the steep bank over the Breeger Bodden to the island of Hiddensee.

Turn-by-turn directions

Section: Cape Arkona - Stralsund (93km, 4-5 stages)

From the stormy Cape Arkona with the striking lighthouses, the hiking trail leads to the listed village of Vitt, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The thatched, octagonal chapel is one of the special pieces of jewelry. Along long stretches of beach and past the Nobbiner Großsteingrab, it goes to the once richest seaman's village of Rügen: Breege. The Juliusruh district attracts with one of the sunniest beaches in Germany and a historical landscape park.

On the Schaabe, a narrow land bridge between the former island centers Wittow and Jasmund, a forest path leads to Gelmer Ort. Here are unique views from the steep bank over the Breeger Bodden to the island of Hiddensee. On the banks of the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, hikers experience a picturesque landscape without great differences in height and, with a little luck, encounter silent meadows and natural forests, which are at home here.

The Semper Forest Park with its fascinating coastal forest leads to Lietzow. Here the natural beach invites you to take a bath. The Schwarze Berge (Black Mountains) with their significant Bronze Age burial mounds are crossed on a shady forest path and the village of Ralswiek is reached. The village with its thatched houses and the lively harbour offers some resting places. It is famous for its unique natural stage, on which the Störtebeker Festspiele take place in summer.

The natural hiking trail leads through a promising hilly landscape to Bergen, the historic island capital. On the Rugard, the highest point in Rügen, the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt observation tower offers a wonderful view of the entire island. From Bergen, the hike leads through forests, grassland and fields in the south to the classicist “white” town of Putbus.

The hiking trail runs through the quiet south of the island with its tranquil villages to the Rügendamm and Stralsund. One color dominates in the Hanseatic city: the bright red of the brick can be found everywhere in the UNESCO World Heritage city.
