Remagen (65 m)

Flying visit to the Ahr.
The RheinBurgenWeg starts in Remagen at the underpass under the B9. Leave the last houses in Remagen behind you and follow the path uphill across a meadow. With the first ascent under your belt, you'll arrive at the ruins of Waldburg Castle at the top. The trail meanders through a jungle-like atmosphere into the woods, passing the Hubertushof stud farm, before descending very steeply towards the Ahr plateau. There you'll be surprised by heath-like vegetation in a clearing beside a lodge. The RheinBurgenWeg now passes above Bad Bodendorf, with the historic town centre on your right, connected by a link path. After crossing the B266 at the outskirts of the town, the trail continues over fields towards Sinzig. You now reach the banks of the River Ahr. Cross the footbridge to reach the other bank and follow the river downstream for a short way. The RheinBurgenWeg now passes through quiet residential areas, past the castle and comes to the Emperor Barbarossa Monument. From the beautifully manicured park you can now spot the basilica which is interesting and well worth a visit. After Sinzig, the RheinBurgenWeg climbs up service roads to the forest with plenty to look at on the way. Eventually you'll come to the edge of the forest where, once again, you'll have a magnificent view of Sinzig and the Ahr Valley. Now back in the forest again, the RheinBurgenWeg now offers you a moment of calmness and tranquillity to let your mind wander. The forest is interrupted by the Mönchsheide, a broad area of meadowland adjacent to a guest house, reached by a path. This is followed by a very varied woodland section that also includes the "Avenue of Trees of the Year". A little later on you'll come to a shelter overlooking the Frankenbach Valley. High up on the Hahnen plateau, signposts point to a former Celtic settlement. The descent now starts to Bad Breisig and offers magnificent views over Bad Hönningen which entice you to linger awhile. Once you've arrived in Bad Breisig, you'll pass the park at the Roman baths before the stage ends in the Brunnenstrasse.
