The Goldsteig - The Northern Route
The idyllic town of Marktredwitz is the starting or end point of the Goldsteig trail. On the way to Passau, we first hike through the Steinwald forest, past the romantic Weißenstein castle ruins, the "Land of a Thousand Ponds" and through the deeply cut Waldnaab valley. Then we pass Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Leuchtenberg, Trausnitz Castle and Oberviechtach. Now we begin the hike along the northern route of the Goldsteig. Between Thanstein and Rötz lie the Steinerne Wand and the Schwarzwihrberg with the Schwarzenburg. In the borderland between Bavaria and Bohemia lies the "Green Roof of Europe", the largest contiguous forest landscape in Europe between the Atlantic and the Urals. Beautiful towns, culture and green nature alternate here. Now it's up to the thousands - Hohenbogen, Kaitersberg, Arber, Falkenstein, Rachel, Lusen and Dreisessel. Some of Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes, such as the sea of blocks on the Lusen or the torrent gorge of the Buchberger Leite, lie along the route.
