The Natural Park Posets-Maladeta is a natural park in the north of the Ribagorza region and north-east of Sobrarbe in the province of Huesca, Region Argón (Spain). It includes two of the highest mountain ranges in the Pyrenees.
It includes the village Benasque, Gistaín, Montanuy, Sahún and San Juan de Plan. It has an area of 33 440.60 ha and its altitude varies between 1 500 m (in the valley) and 3.404 m (the summit of Aneto, the highest peak of the Pyrenees)
The 13th tour of the twin cities was organized by the friends from Gernika-Lumo, Goi-Zal Mendie Taldea.
Our stages and summit ascents:
Stage 1: Benasque - Refugio Estós.
Stage 2: Refugio Estós - Refugio Angel Orús.
Stage 3: Refuge Agel Orús - Pico Posets - Refugio Biados (Viados).
Stage 4: Refugio Biados - Refugio Estós.
Stage 5 Refugio Estós - Val and Cabana del Lliterola - Benasque.
The area was declared on June 23, 1994 under the name "Posets-Maladeta Park" by Law 3/1994 of the Government of Aragon on June 23, 1994.
Además del Aneto, there are also other peaks: Punta d'Astorg (3,355 m), Pico Maldito (3,350 m) Pico del Medio (3,346 m), the Pico de Coronas (3,293 m), Pico de Tempestades (3,290 m) or the summit of Pico del Alba (3,118 m).
The area is Interant because of its moraines and mountain lake (Vallibierna, Creguena, Batisielles, the Millares, Remune) as well as the flora and fauna of the high mountain climate. Next to the valley of Benasque there are still valleys like the valley of Estós and the valley of Vallibierna.
Life is staggered depending on altitude and environmental conditions. In lower elevations we find mountain ash, hazel and birch, in the more humid areas are beech, pine and fir, and the heights stand pine especially the black pine. Under this vegetation is a varied fauna. Marmots, easily recognizable by their shrill whistling, wild boars and chamois, are the largest mammals to observe, but there are also the Pyrenean newt, vipers, vultures, ospreys and golden eagles.
