Maximiliansweg
King Maximilian II undertook a journey in 1858 to get to know his kingdom better. He covered most of the distance by carriage or horseback, but he also climbed some peaks on foot. The German Alpine Association opened the long-distance hiking trail named after him in 1991, which roughly follows Maximilian's route. The main part of the trail runs in Bavaria, but a connecting section is also in Austria. It starts in Lindau on Lake Constance, then goes through the Bregenz Forest, the Allgäu and Ammergau Alps, the Bavarian Pre-Alps and the Chiemgau Alps to the Berchtesgaden Alps. The trail crosses a wonderful natural landscape with mountain peaks and lakes and fantastic views, but there are also some larger towns and cultural highlights along the way. Some castles such as Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can be admired along the way. The trail is very demanding, leading over numerous peaks, but there is always the option of hiking an easier variant through the valley.
