In terms of natural beauty and cultural variety, the river Drava cycle route is one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Europe. You will pass Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia
The route leads from the river Drava spring near Toblach (Italian Dobiacco) in Italy through Austria to Slovenia, where it continues past Dravograd, Maribor and Ptuj all the way to the Slovene-Croatian Border near Ormož.
The Slovene part of the route leads mostly along roads with less traffic and for some stretches along cycling trails and paths. There are many different surfaces and also demanding ascent between Podvelka and Lovrenc na Pohorju, which makes the Slovene part suitable for more experienced cyclists. It is also advisable to use trekking or mountain bikes.
The route is still work in progress, meaning that every year new sections of the road intended for cyclists are build. You can follow the progress on the web.
During the year some organised cycling events take place along the route, among many other events and festivals, most known among them is probably Maribor Lent festival.
On the route you will pass many beutiffull villages and cities. Don't rush past them, rather make detours through them, feeling the surroundings.
Some sections of the route still go on the main roads, so caution is advised.
