The canoe trail begins from the waters of Southern Konnevesi National Park and takes you via lakes, rivers and rapids to Laukaa where you can admire the ancient rock paintings at Saraakallio.
The canoe trail from Konnevesi to Laukaa is an ancient route of hunters and fishers. These waterways were also used by church goers who covered long distances in their wooden rowing boats to attend church services on Sundays.
Starting at the gates of Southern Konnevesi National Park, the first part of the route is also known as the Seven Rapids Route which is followed by open lakes. The rapids (Class I-II) can be bypassed.
Close to the end of the canoeing route you will arrive at Saraakallio rocks, which are famous for their ancient rock paintings that date back thousands of years. The rock painting area is the biggest in Fennoscandia, with more than 100 identified pieces of artwork.
The total length of the canoeing route is 60 km, but you can also split it in sections. There are also some accommodation services along the way.
In addition to canoeing and kayaking, these waterways are also frequented by fishers - and you can easily combine fishing with your canoeing trip. Some of the rapids (Siikakoski and Simunankoski) were among the favourites of Urho Kekkonen, the late President of Finland who was a keen fisherman.
The route description was created in the #Keski-Suomen retkeilyreitit maailmankartalle project, funded by Central Finland's Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas.
A stop at the ancient rock paintings at Saraakallio is a must! They are high up and difficult to spot unless you step ashore.
You can either shoot or bypass the rapids of the route. If you prefer shooting the rapids, please go ashore and check the route before that.
Check also the weather forecast and consider your own canoeing skills when planning the trip. The open lakes are challenging to cross when the weather is windy. When the wind blows from the southwest / southeast, the waves at Lake Liesvesi can get considerably high. At Lake Kynsivesi's long open waters, keep close to the western shore if there is a south wind.
A helmet must be worn in the rapids section of the route. A plastic canoe / kayak is recommended for the start of the route because of the rocky rapids.
Fishing, especially in rapids
