The crossing from Tamaro to Lema is one of the most beautiful pre-alpine excursions in the whole of Ticino. It is partially open to mountain bikes. The views are impressive as you walk through one of the greenest and sunniest parts of Ticino. Start from Rivera. Take the gondola to Alpe Foppa, where you can see the famous church of Santa Maria degli Angeli designed by Mario Botta. The view sweeps over the whole of the plain of Magadino, embracing the beginning of Mesolcina, Lugano and its valleys and the imposing snowy peaks of the Alps. This incredible scenery can be enjoyed during the climb up to Tamaro, but is at its most magnificent at the top. From here the path continues along the crest of the mountain, wending its way up and down as far as Monte Lema, from where there is a steep descent to Basso di Indemini, across the saddle of Bassa di Montoia . A short tract of flat land leads to a steep climb (only for the really fit) up to Gradiccioli but the main path continues with its ups and downs as far as Alpe Agario, and then on to Monte Zottone. A little lower down is the Alpe Mageno - have a break and enjoy some typical local products, including an excellent 'nostrano' wine. By following the path down (Variante B) through the woods it's possible to walk straight down to Miglieglia. Back up on the crest of the mountain, however you go through Monte Magno again and then on to Poncione di Breno. To the right there is an easy path which goes as far as Forcora d'Arosio and then on to Lema, where the trip ends. From here there is a cable car which goes down to Miglieglia, but the intrepid tourist can take the footpath (Variante C) as far as azienda La Sosta. Don't miss the church of Santo Stefano, with its 16thC murals of the twelve apostles. There are several rural tourism centres, which sell local produce as well as preparing wonderful home cooked food. Have a look at the herd of Highland Cattle at Arosio (see picture). From Miglieglia a bus will take you back to Rivera.
